developments have made it possible to produce extremely
sharp solid ceramic razor blades from transformation-toughened
zirconia (ZrO2) ceramic.
Although not recommended for high-shock applications, the
Rc 75 hardness and low friction coefficient make zirconia
ceramic particularly effective in film slitting operations,
where blade life can be more than 100 times that of conventional
steel. These cutting blades are also widely used in manufacturing
capacitors in the electronics industry and pill cutting in
the pharmaceutical industry.
