Rotary cutters rose to prominence in the late 20th century, as their use in the home proliferated. They are frequently used by quilters, seamstresses, and crafters due to their ease of use and the crisp, clean cuts they produce. Resembling a pizza cutter--but with a razor-sharp edge--this type of cutter can make long, smooth cuts and save wear and tear on the user's hands (no more repetitive squeezing, as with traditional scissors). Due to the rotary cutter's sharp blade, it is usually used in conjunction with a protective mat, which is placed beneath the material that is being cut. These mats not only protect counters or tables, but they help to keep the cutter's blades sharp. Rotary blades can either be smooth and straight or feature "pinked" or wavy edges. Olfa, a Japanese company, actually created the rotary cutter back in 1979. Today, Specialty Blades distributes Olfa rotary cutters in four sizes: 18 mm, 28 mm, 45 mm and 60 mm. The smaller rotary cutters are suitable for smaller projects or crafts--think of it as a rolling utility knife--while the larger models are perfect for cutting through several yards (and multiple thicknesses) of fabrics. Over the years, Olfa has added refinements to their rotary cutters in response to consumer needs. For instance, the RTY-DX series features a safety lock. Our RTY-G series has a guide attachment, which helps give the user additional control when working with a pattern. Beyond Olfa's rotary cutters, we also offer replacement blades (in packs ranging from a single blade to 500), mats, grids, and even tiny replica "Ofla rotary cutter" lapel pins.
