A serrated blade features a cutting edge with numerous small points. These small points come into contact with material during the cutting process. When compared with smooth blades, serrated blades have fewer areas of contact. However, the amount of force applied at each contact point is actually greater than that realized with smooth blades. Furthermore, the contact points are at sharper angles in relation to the material that needs to be cut.

The cutting action of a serrated bladed promotes small splits in the affected material. Generally, serrated blades create cuts that are less smooth and precise than some other blades. They are also harder to sharpen. However, serrated blades do provide some advantages. For starters, they cut better when they are dull than plain-edge blades. Also, sawing cuts are easier when the blades are serrated.
