Crush cut, also known as score slitting, involves the use of circular knives to sever one part of a particular material from another. Score slitting actually has a very long history and is considered one of the first types of machine-based slitting techniques ever used. This method of slitting is considered best for applications that involve materials of uneven thickness. For films and thin materials with even levels of thickness, razor slitting is a better choice.

When score slitting is used, circular slitting knives are positioned against a cylinder. The material is pulled between the cylinder and the knives. This type of slitting may be optimal when there is a need for fast, simple set-up. However, there are disadvantages to this method, and effectiveness is entirely dependent upon the material being slit. For example, some materials may develop minute cracks when slit by score slitting. Others may create dust deposits, leading to equipment malfunctions. Often, shear slitting or razor slitting may produce more desirable results.
