When it comes to the slitting processes, it is the material itself that determines the blade that is best used. In choosing between razor blades, shear cutters, and other slitting solutions, the type of material, as well as its thickness, must be considered. In general, the razor blade is considered the most economical type of knife for slitting operations. However, razor blades are simply not well matched to all types of materials.

Razor blades do well in slitting applications that involve soft films. Such films can include vinyl and polyethylene. Razors can also be relied upon to cut polypropylene and lighter forms of polyester with ease. By contrast, heavy gauge polyester is more suited to shear cutting. Certain papers, foils, and laminates are more suitable for shear cutting as well.

Razor blade slitting is often the most economical choice for slitting applications. Set-up can usually be accomplished fairly easily as well. For anything other than light, non-abrasive materials, however, you may need to consider other cutting solutions.
